For the most part the Soul Jars are scattered through out the level, but a few will have a puzzle were you can collect all of them (there are about 6 in each level). One is collecting 100 Shards (this games version of coins) scattered throughout the game (though you can only do this once per level) the other way is collecting Soul Jars. However each level has a way to get a heart that isn't exclusive to that level. Like I said before there are various quests in each level to get the Wraith Hearts, that range from climbing a tower, bringing a key to a locked area, setting a switch, or other Platformer puzzles. Which is kind of a blessing since some of the quests to get the hearts can be very frustrating. In total there are about 81 Hearts that can be collected, but only 60 are required to complete the game. ![]() ![]() Each level has about 10 Hearts or less to collect. The Main goal of the game is to collect Wraith Hearts (this games grotesque version of Power stars) which according to the game's lore, are the still beating hearts of slain Wraiths (obviously). Heck this game could basically be summed up as Mario 64 in a Dark Fantasy setting, as the general concept is collecting certain trinkets to complete the game by exploring open levels, while over coming puzzles and obstacles along the way. GAMEPLAY: This game was heavily inspired by titles like the revolutionary Mario 64 and it shows. but what we got is a simple Dark Fantasy tale set in a platformer. Now it's worth noting that this game has a lot of cut content (which I will go into later) so maybe there was a much more detailed story. I mean we've heard this kind of story many times before. But while the Backstory is pretty interesting, the overall plot of the game feels cliched and surprisingly simple. It seems that Vexx was trying to go towards a Dark and Edgy type of feeling, instead of the light feeling most Platformers go towards. ![]() With this new power Vexx begins his quest to save his homeworld and avenge his Grandfather. But what He finds is a Ancient pair of War Talons that bind to his hands and gives him impressive power. With the taste of Vengeance on his mind, Vexx sneaks aboard the Wraith's airship, for a weapon that could possibly kill him. So He and His Minions enslave the titular Hero's People and kill's his Grandfather. 700 Years later, One of these Wraiths known as Dark Yabu returns to Astara to finish what his brethren started. STORY: Vexx takes place in Astara, a world shattered into a mere asteroid belt by creatures known as the Shadowwraiths. Over the years however, it has earned a small, but dedicated following who long for a sequel or at least a re-release (Which might be possible with the recent remaster of Voodoo Vince and the upcoming Sphinx and the cursed Mummy) But does this game deserve a Remake? let's take a look! As for Vexx itself, the game was generally overlooked and received "mixed" reviews at the time. Vexx is probably most notable for being one of the last games made by Acclaim studios entertainment (Best known for the Turok and NBA jam series) before they when defunct in 2004. ![]() However some less remembered and obscure titles have managed to earn themselves cult followings over the years, Vexx happens to be one of them. It still managed to pop out some popular Games such as Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter. Though the Genre lost some of it's spotlight to more mature Genres around the 2000's. The Genre has spawned some of the most iconic franchises in gaming, the most notable being Mario and Sonic. The Platformer genre is among the oldest and most popular genres in Gaming.
